Chase Farm Hospital

PPSL were awarded the contract back in 2017 to work on the EDF project to build a new energy centre at Chase Farm hospital in Enfield London, which also involved the installation of a new site wide district heating mains.

Due to the complexities of excavating and installing large district heating pipes on a live hospital site which was undergoing the development of a large new wing and energy centre, the project had to be broken in to small phases so as to minimise any disruption this may have caused. As a result the project took two years to complete in full.

The PPSL project team worked with all the site stakeholders to plan a detailed programme that would allow the installation to be carried in the most effective and efficient sequence.

PPSL took the initial consultants route drawings and worked with the other service providers to develop a finalised construction drawing, which was coordinated with the other services including undertaking the design of the leak detection system and also the expansion and contraction design.

The brand of pipe specified was Logstor as well as the Logstor fusion welded band joint, which in our view is the leading joint on the market. PPSL are one of only a small number of contractors in the UK offering in house fusion welding services for the outer casing joints, which are designed to have the longest life expectancy of any joint on the market for District Heating systems.

The project was also specified to been a 100% NDT, meaning that each and every weld was subject to ultrasonic none distractive testing, so as to guarantee that each and every weld met the relevant weld standard applied to the project. All our welders are approved to class one and as would be expected each and every weld passed without issue.

As with all PPSL projects the record keeping and quality standards were exceptional and inline with our 45001 and 9001 ISO standards of performance. The level of praise and positive feedback from our clients audits was testament to the quality of our dedicated and highly experienced site team allocated to this project.

Once the installation was complete PPSL undertook a site wide pressure test to 1.5 times the operating pressure for 24 hours and carried out a full flushing and commissioning programme to BSRIA.

The installation of pre insulated pipess is a more complex process that many other utility services, and primarily undertaken in excavations. The very nature of these working conditions and the products means that upholding and working to audited and approved processes is always essential to ensure the projects we deliver for our clients are the highest industry standards by way of quality and H&S.
